As a Christian I've never read a more screwed up perspective on morality. When I got to letting your conscience guide you because you've learned and retained so much from prior lives I quit.
Polymath entertainer, humorist, songwriter Steve Allen was no stranger to poetry though it was not his strongest talent. Still, fun reading this poems of love and angst from Allen's golden age.

This short book (about 22 pages) discusses five possible bases for morality revelation, intuition, utility, evolution, and mysticism.
Revelation is the word of God. It can't be the basis of morality because even if the revealed rules were appropriate at the time of their revelation, conditions always change, and they become invalid.
(She notes that it should be an all-or-nothing proposition once a body of writing is accepted as revelation, one can't pick and choose from among the rules of behavior it contains which should be obeyed. She observes that most religions do so anyway.)
Intuition is the same as "conscience". It can't be the basis, since it varies in time and place, and many evils have been carried out in its name.
Utility means "the greatest happiness for the greatest number". This seems good it is less subjective than the previous two. One problem is that no one has worked out actual rules of behavior that will attain that goal. Another problem is that the most people are selfish individuals and aren't inspired by it to act morally. So it can't be the basis either.
Evolution is the "unfolding and manifestation of life-energies". It (she says) is the correct basis for morality. It is not Darwinian evolution, bur she tries to appropriate its prestige in order to claim her basis for morality is just as much a natural law. The argument is too complicated to summarize here, but it proceeds from the vague definition above and is in my opinion not very compelling.
Mysticism can't be a basis in the same way as any of the above, because it provides guidance only to the individual mystic.
